3 Great Places to Spend Your Summer Vacation Overseas

By Burt Carey

Summer is upon us, and it’s time for travel. Take a peak at three of the best places you can visit in 2016.

Fiji

The South Pacific enjoys long, sunny days and few rain events, drawing visitors from around the world to its turquoise waters, deluxe resort hotels and sandy beaches, and Fiji is loaded with them all.

summertime travel, 5 best places, great escapes, vacation ideasThis isn’t just an island country. It’s a country made up of more than 300 islands surrounded by waves adored by surfers, clear, clean water divers just love, and miles upon miles of coral reefs. It’s also across the International Dateline, meaning when you and that romantic interest get away for some rest and relaxation, you’ll go full tilt and feel like you’re thousands of miles from home.

Well, that would be because you are. Fiji sits in the South Pacific some 1,300 miles from the northernmost parts of New Zealand.

Whether you want an over-the-water bungalow or just to sip on kava, this is the escape of all escapes where you can choose to be a tourist or not. It’s your vacation!

Paris

If you’re not into great food, architecture and art, maybe Paris isn’t for you. Then again, maybe you’re missing out on one of the best vacations you could take in a lifetime.

summertime travel, 5 best places, great escapes, vacation ideasBreak out the cool duds, and leave your tennis shoes and shorts behind for this trip. Parisians are known for being stylish and love for their guests to dress the part. You can think they’re rude or snobbish, but you’ll never have so much fun fitting in as you will in the City of Light.

Take a stroll along the River Seine. The old churches, architecture and museums will practically draw you inside. When you get hungry for some of the best food known to mankind, you can’t go wrong in the 1st District, near the Champs-Elysees, the Eiffel Tower or in Marias.

Another thing Parisians like are visitors who are polite and who at least make an attempt to speak French, even if it’s a simple parlez-vous anglais (do you speak English?) or excusez-moi (pardon me).

Amsterdam

Don’t believe everything you hear about Amsterdam. Then again…

Yes, like every big city, Amsterdam has its seedy side. Just stay out of the “coffee shops” and avoid the Red Light summertime travel, 5 best places, great escapes, vacation ideasDistrict if you truly want to see this Netherlands gem.

Reserve your evenings for excellent upscale dining in Reguliersdwarsstraat, De Pijp and The Nine Streets, and spend your days doing the tourist thing, such as visiting the Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum, Vondelpark and the Verzetsmuseum (the Dutch Resistance Museum). The Rijksmuseum features pieces by Rembrandt and Vermeer.

And I hope you save your energy for the nightlife of the touristy Leidseplein, where the nightclubs, theaters, casinos and concert venues will have you wondering why you’ve never considered coming to Amsterdam before.

They officially speak Dutch here, but English is just as common.
